Tuesday

Every Tuesday, we post specific items you should gather in order to supplement your 72-hour kit, your 3-month supply, and your longer-term storage. If you are new to our blog, don't worry! You won't be left behind. Just start up where we are and follow along. You will eventually have everything completed! Once the 72-hour kit is complete, we'll be putting together emergency car kits again (week by week). Once those are done, we'll gather the 72-hour kits again. So don't worry, just jump on in and join us where we are today!

This week for your 72-hour kits, prepare your blankets and/or sleeping bags to be ready to go at a moment's notice. I would love to be able to keep our sleeping bags WITH our 72-hour kits, but there just isn't room, so we keep them under our beds. Be sure you know where your sleeping bags are kept, and that they can be grabbed at a moment's notice. Also, consider getting some silver foil emergency blankets. I've included an Amazon link on the right hand side of the blog to give you an idea of what your options are. They aren't expensive. There on Amazon, you can currently get a pack of 12 emergency blankets for $14.40. They take up minimal space in your kits, and they could come in real handy during cold weather. Of course, you may not need twelve of these, but consider sticking a few in your car kits! You can probably also find them at WalMart or similar stores.

How is your three month supply coming along? Not sure where to even start? Check out Abbie's blog post about how to plan your three month supply. It's as simple as coming up with just a few meals, then buying enough of those meals to last about 12 weeks (for example, plan 2 weeks of dinners, buy enough food to make each dinner 6 times, and ta-da! You've got three months' worth of dinners). For more details, check out the blog post. Don't have time to plan your own non-perishable meals and make up the shopping list? Check out our e-book - we've done it all for you!

We are still gathering rice this month for our longer-term storage. Check out our rice recipes here. They use all non-perishables, so they are perfect for your three-month supply! Want to buy rice that's already canned up in #10 cans? Check out LDS Catalog. There, it's currently $32 for 32.4 lbs of rice, all canned up, and the price includes shipping.
