Safely Gathered In: Weekly Roundup: Applesauce and Inventories


Stephanie over at A Year of Crockpotting made applesauce this week in her crockpot! She suggests freezing it, which would be a great way to store some applesauce. Wait for apple season so you can get dirt cheap apple prices. This looks SO much easier from the way we did it growing up. To be safe, don't store all your applesauce in your freezer, if you love applesauce, purchase some jars that can be kept in the pantry until opened, just in case you don't have electricity at some point.

Last week we shared an amazing food storage room. This is a great goal for me, but simply not a reality at this time. So I cleaned out my daughters' closet for water storage space and stuck bags of chips up in my decorative baskets on top of the bookcase. Mountain Man (my better half) didn't even notice until I pointed it out. Don't get down if your food storage doesn't have it's own space, just look for ways to sneak your food storage in, it's worth it!

Way to go with the baskets!
When I teach organizing classes, I often make personal trips to people's homes, and they are discouraged that they don't have space for things. There is ALWAYS space! After I move things around, you would be surprised at what a small apartment can hold. ( and look great too! ) I love things to look nice, and be stored! :)

I have a question that doesn't have anything to do with this post, but someone may be able to help me...
I have all of my " Bottled" jars on shelves. How can I protect them in case on an earthquake? Would you recommend putting a board across my shelf in the front? You can see if you go back to the post of my room what I mean. What will keep them more safe and stable?? Anyone???

Ann Marie, I left this same comment on your blog under your food storage room post, but I'm reposting it here in case other people are curious:

About preserving your glass jars in an earthquake... you could try securing a 2-3" wooden slat or something similar across all four sides of the shelf, maybe 1-2" up from the shelf itself. You could nail or screw it right into the sides of the shelf base. Does that make sense? I'm not sure if it would completely save everything in an earthquake, but it would probably help.

You may also want to consider somehow securing your shelves to the wall. You could use nails or hooks or something... I'm pretty sure there are special nails for concrete?? That would help too.
