Every other Thursday we will post about different basic cooking skills. Knowing how to prepare meals from scratch is a very important step in becoming self-reliant, which in turn is a crucial component of being prepared. Being able to cook meals for your family will give you confidence, more family togetherness time, and lower your food budget=more money for food storage! If you have a basic cooking skill you'd like to learn, email us! These meals contain perishable food items as this is a different series than our food storage recipes.
Now, most of you are thinking, brownies? Who needs to know how to make brownies? The box always tastes better!

OH MY! It's as if you were reading my mind today! I was just about to do a Google search for brownie recipes to make a batch for my (ailing) gentleman friend. And low and behold - a recipe on your blog. And I have all of those ingredients - in abundance - in my kitchen! Thanks for posting. :)
I love brownies. I always happy to try new recipe.
Hey, that's my recipe that I've been using for 30+ years. Only difference, I stir everything into the pan with melted butter - start with sugar, end with eggs and vanilla - just so the eggs don't scramble.
Love the brownies - hate the cleanup.
I love brownies. Hardly ever use the box stuff...homemade is just as simple and better for you, I'm sure, if they are "good" for you at all, that is!
Oh, and I DO know where you can get one of those glass things for your micro....I have an extra and I'll cut you a great deal! I have been meaning to put it on Craigslist or something...email me if you're interested....seriously! (wildsquirrel.blogspot at gmail.com)
I've mixed up the dry ingredients for my homemade brownies and keep them in a plastic container so they are just as easy as a box mix.
My recipe is: 16 c. sugar, 6 c. cocoa, 8 tsp. baking powder, and 8 tsp. salt.
Brownies: 2 1/2 c. mix, 1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour, 4 eggs, 3/4 c. oil. Bake in 9X13 glass dish 32 minutes at 325 degrees.
Note: I add fresh whole wheat flour so it will have more nutrients, but you could add white flour to the mix or use whole wheat flour in the mix and store in refrigerator.
I enjoy your site, Thanks.
