Tuesday!

Every Tuesday, we post specific items you should gather in order to supplement your 72-hour kit, your 3-month supply, and your longer-term storage. If you are new to our blog, don't worry! You won't be left behind. Just start up where we are and follow along. You will eventually have everything completed! Once the 72-hour kit is complete (in just a few weeks!), we'll be putting together emergency car kits again (week by week). Once those are done, we'll gather the 72-hour kits again. So don't worry, just jump on in and join us where we are today!

This week for your 72-hour kits, add emergency thermal blankets. These are very cheap ($1-5 each, depending on brand) and could be essential in an emergency. In the column to the right of this post, you'll see an Amazon link to a 4-pack of these blankets (on sale for $5! [update: they are now just under $9]). Obviously, you can buy them other places, so look around and find what works best for you. You may also want to add one or two of these blankets to your car kits, especially if you live in a colder climate. Also, consider adding some glow sticks to your kits this week - a couple per person.

How is your three-month supply coming along? Have a meal plan, and buy according to that. Because we are always adding new recipes here at SGI, you may even want to make a 3-week meal plan (instead of 2 weeks like we originally did) and rotate that 4 times (for 12 weeks total). I don't know about you, but I've got to add that pizza recipe to my plan!!

This month, we are gathering OATS for our longer-term storage. Not sure how much you need? Check out Provident Living's food storage calculator here. Oats will be stored along with your other grains. To find some great food storage recipes using oats, check out our oats recipes (so far) here.

Tomorrow, we'll post some general information about oats. Thursday, we'll have a great article about 72-hour kit distribution. What do you put in each person's kit? Find out Thursday! And of course, Friday is another great food storage recipe using only non-perishable items.

I like oats in muffins and am interested in trying oats in bread, too, if you find any recipes. I go through my oats a lot quicker when I bake with them than just eating oatmeal for breakfast.

Thanks for this great blog. I just started reading a little while ago. I have a question on the emergency blankets. Is there a big difference in the $1 vs. the $5 ones? I know you generally get what you pay for, but if I do have to use them, will I regret buying the cheap ones?

Bug out bag. Try to take foods that do not take water to prepare, I see so many bug out bags with things like, instant oatmeal, hot chocolate & soups. The water should be for
drinking & take vitamins & protein bars. I also take a bottle of fiber, not only is
fiber needed but it also swells for a full feeling. I came across what is called
Lifecaps. They are a capsule that has everything needed to survive without food with
the exception of water. It is full of vitamins & minerals plus Iodine. Anyway, you take
three of them a day & drink water. I can actually take enough food in one backpack to
las 6 months because of these little Lifecaps, protein bars, fiber & water. I will run
out of water in a week so I do carry a small filter & a couple of those straw water
filters that filter the water as you suck.
You do not always have the ability or time to heat water to make soup or oatmeal. Anyway,
after I bought 25 bottles I found a coupon code & bought 75 bottles more. The coupon code
is... healthcap It will get you 33% off. There are also sites that have those filter straws
that are cheaper than any of the stores around here. (SLC) I think they are a really good
idea along with some purification pills. I cannot remember the sites off the top of my head
but you can Google for aquamira filter straw. Aquamira is the manufacture but do not buy
off there site because I have found them for almost 1/2 what they want on their own site
on other sites. Good luck, Gods speed & get serious about your bug out bag!
