Food Storage Friday: Muesli

As a teenager I spent a part of my summers with a aunt and uncle who lived overseas. My first morning in Germany, I woke up to a breakfast of raw oatmeal. I was confused. Wasn't this supposed to be cooked? The room temperature milk was enough to throw me off, but raw oatmeal?

Turns out this mix of raw oatmeal, nuts and dried fruit was muesli,   a European classic breakfast. It wasn't long before I loved it too.

Simple to put together, the ingredients: Oats (don't believe the picture--use regular oats not quick cook), dried fruit and nuts, I used sunflower seeds found in the bulk section of the grocery store.

You'll need a container to keep it in, perhaps the oats container you just used. My aunt stored hers in a tall square tupperware, with a 1/4 steel, measuring cup with a bent handle to scoop the muesli out.  It's amazing how you remember the little details.

Measure out the oats, nuts and fruit to the proportion that you like.

Like I said before, use old fashioned or regular oats.

Mix it all together

And return to your container.

The result is simple, hearty but fresh tasting cereal for your breakfast table.

Muesli

old fashioned oats
dried fruit
nuts

Mix together and store like cereal. Serve with milk.

Try roasting the oats and nuts first, I think it improves the taste.
You can roast the ingredients in a frying pan or in the oven.

In Finland when I lived there in the early 90's, they ate muesli mixed in their yogurt(instead of milk). That was breakfast. Yum!
Of course their yogurt is more of a runny, slightly thickened yogurt, not like our thick as sour cream yogurt here in the US.

Next time try this variation, and I think you'll like it even more. Soak equal parts of the oatmeal with milk or cream overnight in the fridge, adding a little sweetener to it (you can adjust this more later). I like rapadura or honey best, but white sugar and maple syrup will work. The next morning check the mixture to see if it is sweet enough for you. Then layer the mixture with nuts, dried/fresh/frozen fruit, and, if you like, whipped cream. An alternative to the whipped cream would be to pour just a little milk or cream in between the layers or to use yogurt. It is yummmmmmy! Hope you like it!

I think I might want to give this a try! I like each of the ingredients separately - so why not together!

I'm going to have to try this since I LOVE muesli but store bought is extremely expensive. Thank you so much for sharing.
