How To: Make Homemade Syrup

So homemade syrup is both EASY and delicious. And if you know how to make it, then it's one less thing to store, because you'll already have sugar stored, right? Well, you should.

Ingredients: Brown Sugar, White Sugar, Maple Flavoring, Vanilla flavoring and Water

Heat the water to boiling and then add sugar. In a pinch you could use all white sugar, but it wouldn't taste quite as good. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.

Remove from heat and stir in the maple flavoring....

...and the vanilla flavoring.

All done! Go eat some pancakes. This will store for a long time in your fridge because it's just sugar and water. If you have lots of syrup eaters in your family, double or triple the recipe, it's delicious.

Excellent! My mom used to make syrup all the time, but I've never gotten the recipe. Thanks!

Is this a thin syrup? I'm not a fan of really thin syrup...is there any way to make it thicker?

This is a thinner syrup. To make it thicker, decrease the amount of water to 2/3 cup and add a couple tablespoons of butter. But butter isn't really food storage friendly. :) Try this recipe though, it's REALLY good!

Ali gave me one that's similar: 4c sugar, 1/2c brown sugar, 1/4 c caro syrup or honey, 2c water, 1 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp maple extract. You cook it the same. I'm going to have to do some experimenting. I love this recipe...but am excited for another. :)

The official family recipe actually has a whole stick of butter, 2/3 cup water, and the sugar. Abs has tried to lighten things up a little...

Hi! Found this post by googling "how to make syrup".
Have you ever tried a berry syrup? Specifically Chokecherry? Or Strawberry, or Raspberry? From juice? Can you bottle/home can it and store it with the rest of your food storage? Do you know? Help?

My sister gave me a delicious alternative to maple syrup: in place of the maple & vanilla flavorings, add 1 tsp orange extract & 1/2 tsp almond extract. Very elegant-tasting -- esp on waffles! You could, of course, substitute your own favorite flavorings for those, as well.

I have a very similar family recipe to yours... it's 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup brown sugar (bring to a boil, then remove from heat) and then add 1/2 Tbsp maple flavoring and 1/2 Tbsp vanilla. That's some good stuff! :) And re: your comment that butter is not very food storage friendly, one of my cousins just learned how to bottle/can butter and posted it on her blog. You can check it out at: http://greenappleorchard.blogspot.com

I also do this in the microwave with a 2 cup glass measuring cup and I also do the 1 c. water with 1 c. of each sugar. Microwave for 2 minutes stir then microwave for 2 more minutes. You then already have it in a pourable container ready for immediate use hot.

Just ran across this and I'd been thinking about the fact that we didn't have commercial maple syrup when I was a kid. Mom stretched resources and we were never hungry. She made a version of this. Probably using all white sugar.
