Welcome to our blog!

I think I speak for many people when I say that building up food storage and being prepared for emergencies can be difficult tasks to complete. I know they are things that I have struggled with, especially since I'm on a very tight budget (and I know many of you are, too!). Sometimes people think that since they don't have a lot of money, or a lot of time, or much space, that the commandment to build up a supply of food storage doesn't really apply to them. But that's not the case!

In the October 2005 General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Gordon B. Hinckley said,

"...The best storehouse is the family storeroom. In words of revelation the Lord has said, "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing" (D&C 109:8). Our people for three-quarters of a century have been counseled and encouraged to make such preparation as will assure survival should a calamity come...We can set aside some water, basic food, medicine, and clothing to keep us warm. We ought to have a little money laid aside in case of a rainy day."

You CAN afford it, and you CAN accomplish it! This blog is here to help you. We will be your step-by-step guide, and we can all do this together! We're all on some sort of budget, and we're all busy. Many of us just don't know where to start, but that's about to change. Start here! Let's do this together!

We are designing this blog so that hopefully one year from now, you will have: 72-hour kits, a car emergency box, a three-month supply of everyday food, and a year's supply of basic essentials (rice, wheat, flour, sugar, oats, beans, etc). We will also teach skills, such as how to cook in a dutch oven, how to make (and use!) a solar oven, how to "can" food, and how to actually use the food that you store!

We have ideas about how this blog should go, but we will most likely be changing some things around a bit as we go along and get into our "groove". Right now though, the schedule is as follows:

Monday - A little reminder about why this project is so important and, basically, give us all a little push to succeed. Also, one Monday per month we will be sharing ideas for activities that will teach your family about food storage/emergency preparedness.
Tuesday - We will give you "assignments" as to what you should set aside that week for your three-month supply, as well as one or two items to put in your car emergency box. Sometimes you will already have these things in your home, and other times you will have to purchase them.
Friday - Food Storage Friday! We will share recipes for meals you can make using your food storage.
Saturday - Roundup - We love to read blogs about frugal living and we'll share links to our favorite things we read during the previous week.

On some Wednesdays we will have tutorials on various topics, and hopefully some guest posts where people can share their expertise.

We are very excited to get started with this project, and we hope you are too.

I'm so excited for this to get started! Food storage has been on our minds a lot lately.

My ward is doing "Stay Alive with $25". Every month they do one item at the storehouse, and want everyone to spend at least $25 towards food storage. I can't eat a lot of stuff they sell because of my food restrictions, but I can go to BJs with Phil to buy the stuff I can eat. I definitely have plenty of the everyday foods, it's the longterm stuff I slack in.

Hey, could you also include a problem-solver category of some sort? Maybe like, how to know when it goes bad, or some reasonable examples of where to STORE said food storage in tight spaces? We live in a condo/apartment area, and the biggest reason people here are slow to stash is "where would I put it?" Jamo and I have tried to get creative with it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a common excuse or viable problem for many people, one that they may appreciate a collective insight on.
I think this blog idea is GREAT. I'm gonna link it on my own blog today.
