Cansolidator Giveaway (& other discounts!)

Cansolidator Pantry
A couple of months ago, we were contacted by a Shelf Reliance independent consultant, Heather. She explained that Shelf Reliance has a new sales model, and they now have consultants who are able to give customers the best price possible.  She asked if we would be interested in giving away a Cansolidator, and also share a discount with all of you.  Um, yes please!

We've given away Cansolidators before, and we know you love them.  Abbie and I also each have one, and they've been so handy in our little houses/apartments.  They really are great space-savers.  You can read more about it here.  That link is also the direct link to Heather's store, where she is selling the Cansolidator for over 50% off of the retail price.

In case you aren't familiar with this product, here's a brief rundown on the Cansolidator Pantry:

-Holds both small and medium cans
-Holds up to 40 cans, and up to 100 lbs of food
-Adjustable width, so YOU plan how you want to store your cans

(Click here for more information, if you're interested)

Want to win a Consolidator Pantry?  Just leave a comment on this blog post and answer the following question:

What kind of food storage question(s) do you have?  Is there anything you'd like to see us do on the blog that would help you out? Any particular topic we should address?

We'd love to get your feedback so we can make this blog as effective as possible!  If you don't have any questions, just comment about anything you want! :) This giveaway is open until Friday, May 13 at midnight EDT.  We will announce the winner on Saturday. One comment per person, please.

Thanks again to Heather for this giveaway opportunity!  And don't forget to visit Heather's store and see what else she is selling for a discount!  Here are the direct links:

Good luck!

I love your tips and your site. Maybe can you share some more tips on container gardening for those of us with only balconies for a yard?

You know, I thought I was doing pretty good with my food storage until we had a couple of power outages that lasted 24 hours each and wow was I amazed at what I didn't have or wouldn't be able to use. I don't know what I'd say for you all to add, but I know I sure will be paying closer attention to everything for the next little bit so we can be more prepared for next time!

I love reading your blog. I got married a few years ago and your blog has helped me learn more about food storage. I would love for you to address living in college and having food storage on your blog sometime. I know it is a topic that you have touched on once or twice but I think it would be really cool to do like a one day a week or whole week thing dedicated for students

Tracie in CA said...

I just bought these last week...unfortunatly when they sent me the confirmation they tell me it's going to take 6 to 8 weeks to ship? WHAT??? I understand these sites are being hammered due to the things that are happening but why not tell your customers when they're checking out?

I am new to the whole food storage concept so I would ask this: How do you make it not so overwhelming? I feel like I'm struggling just trying to get even 1 month's supply going. How do you keep your motivation when it seems to just take so long?

Thanks for your great tips and tricks! :)

What is the best way (economic or space-wise) to store enough protein?

I get nervous building too much meat in the freezer, if you lose power you have to consume that meat quickly. Dehydration is a long process and Canned meat is very heavily preserved. I am not sure what would be the best option.

Any other suggestions out there?

Meredith said...

My daughter and I have Celiac and I'm *always* interested in the shelf life of non-wheat/oats/rye/barley grains. And how do you store them? Some of the grains are so protein rich (like Quinoa) that I can't imagine that even storing them in airtight buckets would be the way to go for long term, and that probably only freezing would work..
I also love gadgets and organization tips. Especially for small or cluttered spaces!

I love your posts on ideas for "hiding" the food storage in plain sight. I live in a small place, that's just part of living in the city, so those tips are handy.

Another part of living here is that I don't have a yard for a garden. Perhaps you could post tips about gardening on decks or in containers?

I now have about enough for almost 2 months, but I am working on building that up:)

Your site is FABULOUS! seriously! I searched my head for anything to give you some feedback about, and the only thing I could come up with that I'm not sure if you talk about too much is how best to store the food, like what kinds of containers are best, and how..such as can we put wheat in 2-liter bottles and stuff like that? And do we need to put an oxygen absorber in them, or not. Also, maybe some about container gardening....how to best accomplish this.
Your site is Great! Keep up the good work!

How long will you be able to cook without power?

If power goes out during summer, people will cook with charcoal on the grill, camping cook-stoves with various fuels including propane canisters or butane cans, hobo stoves and rocket stoves (assuming they have enough sticks or wood pieces to chop up, solar ovens when it's not overcast.

Include making coffee and purifying water, heating bathing and dish-washing water too.

So how many meals and other heating liquids tasks would one average-sized bag of charcoal cook? Or containers of fuel like kerosene, white gas, propane, butane? If we had averages for each type of cooking fuel, we could add them up to know how long we could cook without power.

What are some tricks to get more out of our fuel? I've heated water in a small pan on top of our kerosene lantern, but I don't have a way to do it using candles.

Then there's winter when some might be tempted to cook things inside because it's so cold outside, plus the bonus of keeping the generated heat inside, but some of those listed above cause fumes that can kill if not ventilated properly. What about fireplace cooking then? Other than roasting on a stick, I'm pretty inexperienced with cooking in a fireplace.

What can be cooked in foil wraps? Is it recommended that everything be double-wrapped? How much foil should we stock up on? What tools are required to use cast iron pots in the fireplace?

Anonymous said...

Love your blog, been following it for couple years. Great job! Maybe something on storing fuels and different types, maybe some sources of indoor heat? That's what I'm starting on now. Thanks Lorie pansy567@msn.com

I totally need one of those consolidators!! My cans are always a mess!

I have been wondering how long canned goods last after the due date? I have a bunch of pinto beans and chili and some campbell cheddar cheese that are from 2009 and 2010. Should I just throw them out or are they ok to try? My mother-in-law suggested giving them to the food bank since they will be used up faster than we would use them. Is that an ok idea?

I am horrible with organizing and rotating my food. Do you have any suggestions? I have a laundry room where I keep it all and I have a few storage shelfs and some built in ones, but everything is just kind of thrown on the shelves.

I love your blog! Thanks so much for your tips and encouragement:)

I am trying to get my food storage going and have been for several years now. I have been trying to buy an extra can of something everytime I go shopping, but it's hard when you hit the end of the month and need to dip into your storage a little.

I also worry about what my family eats...we don't have wheat and wouldn't know what to do with it if we did. I have tried to encorporate what we eat into our food storage, but what do you do about storing meat? My freezer is pretty packed with stuff, but that doesn't seem like the right solution. What do others do about it?

Lynette acorntooak at juno dot com said...

Maybe I missed it, how do you plan on cooking? What heat source do you plan on using? I have a hard time with long term storage because we eat so much fresh stuff right now, lots of meat, veggies, fruit, dairy, little carbs, so it is hard for me to rotate.

I'd like a list of the average number of meals that "xyz" fuel would cook, listing all the easy to obtain types of fuels (propane, charcoal, butane, kerosene, white gas, alcohol, wood, sterno) - so that we could inventory our various fuels to determine if we had enough fuel to cook our stored and gardened foods.

I guess HOW we cooked would affect how much fuel we used up, so maybe something like "cooked traditionally" vs "cooked with fuel-saving tricks" (thermos or haybale/blanket after initial heating, or Dutch Oven vs grilling).
