Every Tuesday, we post specific items you should gather in order to supplement your 72-hour kit, your 3-month supply, and your longer-term storage. If you are new to our blog, don't worry! You won't be left behind. Just start up where we are and follow along. You will eventually have everything completed! Once the 72-hour kit is complete, we'll be putting together emergency car kits again (week by week). Once those are done, we'll gather the 72-hour kits again. So don't worry, just jump on in and join us where we are today!
This month for your 72-hour kits, add a flashlight - one per person. You also need to add batteries if applicable, but I really recommend getting wind-up flashlights. You can search Amazon and check out reviews of various ones there, or just check out your local stores and see what's available there too. A good wind-up flashlight may be a little pricier than the regular battery-operated kind, but by the time you buy batteries and replace them every couple of years (and always wonder and hope that they work when you need them), you will probably be saving money in the long run. And another plus... your kids can play with them all they want and they won't die out! (You'll just lose them, like we do) :)
How's your three-month supply coming along? Don't forget to store a couple months' worth of medications and other OTC medicines that your family uses. You should also have vitamins for every member of the family.
In July for our longer-term storage, we are gathering RICE! I love rice! Emergency Essentials sells rice in #10 cans and in buckets, so check those out. You can also buy rice at the grocery store and can it up yourself, or put it in buckets with gamma lids. Read more about rice storage here.

Re: Long term Storage - too funny, when I was ordering black beans and buying pinto beans at Costco that was on the long term list the next week.
I am just in the process of buying rice from Costco, just need to buy Jasmine and get a couple more icing buckets.
Re: Flashlights - they have some cute ones for kids with characters on them now, definitely a nice cheery thing to have for them.
