Moving with food storage?

The following is an excerpt from an email we received last week. It's a great question, but neither Abby nor I know the answer. However, we'd love to hear some advice from you!

"I am now facing a cross country move and wondered if you had any advice or hints? The move is large enough that we will be hiring a moving company. I am worried that they may have issues with moving all of my goodies. We are a family of 3 that has a 9 month supply in our house. The items that come from the Bishops Storehouse are all in Mylar bags and safely inside the storehouse boxes but most of my grains are in 5 gallon buckets. Emptying my water containers will not be a problem but they sure are bulky.

"Maybe I am being paranoid and over worrying as I tend to do. Just thought I would ask if you had any experience or had any suggestions."

Any advice from our readers about moving with food storage would be greatly appreciated!!

It's Tuesday

Every Tuesday, we post specific items you should gather in order to supplement your 72-hour kit, your 3-month supply, and your longer-term storage. If you are new to our blog, don't worry! You won't be left behind. Just start up where we are and follow along. You will eventually have everything completed! Once the 72-hour kit is complete, we'll be putting together emergency car kits again (week by week). Once those are done, we'll gather the 72-hour kits again. So don't worry, just jump on in and join us where we are today!

This week for your 72-hour kits, add a small first aid kit. You can buy them ready-made or put one together yourself. The Red Cross has a great list of things to add if you decide to do that. You can also find ready-made kits at WalMart or even online for under $15.

How is your three-month supply coming along? Besides storing food and water, don't forget other essentials like toilet paper and soap. My goal is to have everything I need for 3 months, so I don't ever have to leave my house for 3 months if I didn't need to.

When it comes to storing your three-month supply, make up a food plan and buy according to that. We have a ready-made three month food plan for you, along with the complete shopping list, in our e-book. This is a great option if you are having trouble coming up with enough non-perishable recipes, or if you just don't have time to sit down and plan it all out!

This month for our longer-term storing, we are gathering beans. Don't know much about beans? Check out the "bean series" we shared with you last March. Don't know how to cook with beans? Check out our bean recipes. They use all non-perishables, so they're perfect recipes to have in your three month plan.

Want to buy beans already canned up in #10 cans? Check out LDSCatalog.com. All prices include shipping.

Inspirational Thought

"We encourage you to follow this counsel [food storage] with the assurance that a people prepared through obedience to the commandments of God need not fear."

(First Presidency letter, 24 June 1988).
